Home and Workplace Environment Assessments

A home and workplace assessment for someone with vision impairment is about making environments safer, more efficient, and easier to navigate using the person’s remaining vision (and non-visual skills). Instead of focusing only on eyesight, the process looks at real-life tasks—how someone cooks, works, moves around, reads, and interacts with their space.

Home Environment Assessment

A vision rehabilitation specialist evaluates how well the home supports daily living activities.

Key Areas Assessed

🚶 Mobility & Safety

  • Are walkways clear of obstacles?
  • Are there tripping hazards (rugs, cords, clutter)?
  • Can the person navigate safely at night?

Common modifications:

  • Remove clutter and secure rugs
  • Add contrasting tape on stairs or edges
  • Install night lights or motion-sensor lighting

Lighting & Glare

  • Is lighting bright enough for tasks like cooking or reading?
  • Are there glare sources (windows, shiny surfaces)?

Solutions:

  • Adjustable task lighting (e.g., gooseneck lamps)
  • Curtains or blinds to control sunlight
  • Matte finishes to reduce reflections

Contrast & Organization

  • Are important objects easy to distinguish from their background?
  • Is the home consistently organized?

Solutions:

  • Use high-contrast colors (dark plate on light table)
  • Label items with large print or tactile markers
  • Keep frequently used items in fixed locations

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

The assessor watches how the person performs tasks like:

  • Cooking
  • Medication management
  • Personal grooming

Adaptations:

  • Talking devices (clocks, thermometers)
  • Large-print or tactile labels
  • Measuring tools with high contrast

Reading & Leisure

  • Can the person comfortably read mail, books, or use devices?

Solutions:

  • Magnifiers or video magnification systems
  • Proper seating and lighting setup
  • Audiobooks or voice assistants

Workplace Environment Assessment

The goal here is to maintain productivity, reduce fatigue, and ensure safety while meeting job demands.

Key Areas Assessed

Workstation Setup

  • Screen size, font size, and viewing distance
  • Desk layout and ergonomics
  • Lighting conditions at the desk

Solutions:

  • Larger monitors or dual screens
  • Screen magnification or contrast settings
  • Anti-glare filters

Navigation & Accessibility

  • Can the person move safely between areas (desk, restroom, exits)?
  • Are signs readable?

Solutions:

  • Clear pathways and consistent layout
  • High-contrast or large-print signage
  • Orientation and mobility training
